“Studio Lighting Essentials”
placement of the subject and light are important here just make sure the lights are low but that they still give you an even spread on the background
“I’ve been working on some new (to me at least!)Photoshop retouch techniques
“Carving” is basically copying the photo – desaturating it and then using the burn and dodge tools to lighten or darken selected areas on the skin or background. Set this layer to Softlight and then apply it to the original photo (aka “base layer”) .with a lower opacity (I used about 60% on this one)
I also used another copied layer run through the High Pass filter and set that to multiply (this sharpens the image without using unsharp mask), and yet another was placed on top of that with some subtle arirbrushing on the skin..
Finally – I put a texture layer over the whole photo set to overlay and with about 45% opacity…
I think I’m going to start doing this all the time now!”

“Another one of my tricks is that I will place the model about a foot in front of the key light. I then duvetyne one side of where she is standing and over expose between a stop and a stop in a half. Throw a wind machine on her, and voila! It’s a pretty interesting shot. This is how I lit Heather, the model in the picture above. I actually had her hold herself up on top of a box covered with duvetyne so we could get a lot of shadow in there. Then I moved the light about a foot behind her and over exposed about 1 stop.”
